Public data is data that is available for anyone to access, use or share. The Agency’s public data is accessible on this website under an international Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, consistent with the Safe Work Australia Copyright policy. Under this licence, you must give appropriate credit (attribution) when you adapt, redistribute or copy our data.

Safe Work Australia is committed to making its data publicly accessible consistently with its Evidence function under the Safe Work Australia Act 2008. This is in line with the Australian Government Public Data Policy and the Data Availability and Transparency Act 2022. 

We make our data publicly accessible on our website if it meets the following principles:

  • there are no legal restrictions on access to the data
  • it does not contain Safe Work Australia’s internal administrative data, or any personal information
  • it cannot reasonably be used to deduce an individual’s identity
  • a risk assessment has been conducted according to Safe Work Australia’s internal processes, consistent with the Data Availability and Transparency Act 2022.

In cases where we are not able to release our data to the public, we assess data requests based on the “Five Safes” Framework and the data sharing principles outlined in the Data Availability and Transparency Act 2022:

The Five Safes Framework

  Principles What it means
1  Projects We share data for a purpose that delivers a public benefit, and that is legal and ethical.
2  People We ensure data users have the right authority and expertise to use our data.
3  Data We assess whether your project requirements can be met with aggregate or unit record data. 
4  Settings Where needed, we share the data using platforms that minimise risk of unauthorised use.
5  Outputs Where needed, we safeguard any outputs of the analysis of our data before they are further shared or released.

To access some types of data, you may also be required to obtain ethics approval for your project. For access to unit record data, entry into a Data Sharing Agreement with Safe Work Australia will be required.
